In part the artist's statement said: “So many women come to Hollywood chasing a dream to become an actor, dancer or singer and sadly due to the lack of opportunities, combined with the high cost of living they are faced with the reality of having to strip in bars and clubs." Robbie Conal has a soft side? Well, why not? "I have this technique that is pretty much tooled for adversarial portraiture. It's for negative [subjects], to paint people I don't like," said Conal. As for this piece his mood changes.  "They're heroes of mine. I was really nervous making those paintings." I  KCET

ART DOWN:  Laying on its side with legs up, this sculpture has been looking like large-scale roadkill. Now the orange bird will "coming soon to the Springs Preserve, where the real roadrunners and coyotes live" posted artist Alisha Kerlin on her Facebook feed. The large-scale roadrunners have been, for the most part, homeless after a debut in  “Roadrunners That Won’t Run Far” at Clark County Rotunda Gallery in 2014.  (The flock of four is actually down to three. The pink one met a premature demise). “Las Vegas has a specific identify where unrelated things sit next to each other,” Kerlin said during the exhibition. “It’s hard to represent Las Vegas with one object.”

on the UNLV Campus

Opening reception
Friday, February 26
from 6 to 9 p.m.
Thesis shows march on at UNLV.  Maureen Halligan's exhibition opens today. Her paintings strive to explore conversations about abstract painting by using blue or green painters tape as an inspiration and tool to test limits and processes of contemporary art, so promises the release:. Based on the artist's previous statements and exhibitions, those promises are kept. More from the release:
While using various media such as painting, installation and video, her concept remains consistent; an exploration of the tension between abstraction and representation. Each process is indicative of the relationships formed within abstract painting: flatness or extreme depth, nonobjective or trompe l'oeil, organized pattern or chaos, slowed time or a cursory read, an object or an idea.
“Temporary Fix” is Halligan’s thesis show for the UNLV graduate program. She will graduate in late May with her Master in Fine Arts, and holds a Bachelors of Fine Arts with Honors in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design.  The Master of Fine Arts graduate program at UNLV is a three year studio program. The program includes two solo exhibitions including midway point and final thesis shows.
