Blogging is a long road trip, so you have to prep well. From December to this past Monday,  Paint This Desert went on a number of mural photo safaris, including the town of Overton in Nevada, and Victorville, Barstow, Coachella, Twentynine Palms in the deserts of California. Those trips added quite a bit of data to what was revisited and rediscovered in Las Vegas, Henderson, and Boulder City.  Still waiting to be marked off the list before summer are trips into Pahrump, Nev., and Needles, Calif. Arizona and New Mexico are slated for Fall.

Abandonment of public space is a recurring muse.  Kristen Peterson writes that Suzanne Hackett-Morgan’s paintings exude a “personal relationship between the Las Vegas artist and the land she has tread.”

From Crystal Bridges' website: "The process for selection of artists to be included in 'State of the Art' has been developed by a national group of curators, collectors, and other experts in the field of contemporary art. From an initial list of 10,000 names, this group has narrowed the search to 1,000 artists whose studios Crystal Bridges President Don Bacigalupi and Assistant Curator Chad Alligood are visiting in person. Of these, some 100 artists will be selected for the exhibition."

City of North Las vegas

2/4/2014

In the City of North Las Vegas,  some are thinking how art can help the city pull out from the recession through a visual and performing arts initiative funded by public/private partnerships.  A steering committee met last week for the first time, says an art source.

With no set timeline, North Las Vegas city council will be presented with ideas, which one can assume would include public art.  Council will ultimately make the decision if a new city-sponsored program is one way to catch up with Las Vegas and Henderson.

Beleaguered by lost tax base, and a threat of bankruptcy, as reported in the Las Vegas Sun, the city is open to any ideas that can help a recovery.

The local models are Clark County Arts Commission covering Southern Nevada, and the City of Las Vegas Arts Commission.

Even the City of Henderson is shifting around department duties that will allow their public art programming to grow.

Commissioning works with their own public art programming is McCarran International Airport and the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC). On highways, the Nevada Department of Transportation, runs their version of Public Art through their Landscapes & Aesthetics Program.

The Strip is outside the city limits of Las Vegas, and the dominate public art there is  CityCenter's Fine Art Program.
