BENCHED. A series of one-act plays at the Paul Harris Theatre at UNLV. April 22, 23 (7pm). April 24 (Noon). Poster by by Alex Knowlton, writer of "Spilled Milk." | CURTAIN: To explore the use of public space as a vessel for street art I plan to integrate other disciplines, including performance. To return to that former life of mine, I took Sean Clark's one-act playwriting course. He assigned each writer to pen a ten-minute scene using a Las Vegas park bench as a shared setting. That fixed location was a perfect setting for rival street artists debating aesthetic differences between wheat-paste and aerosol while having mutual bitterness about civic funding hiring outsiders to design park benches. It was titled "Benchgazhi." Sound familiar? I wrote a draft and it was quickly a full length play. I changed to something simpler; a dancer and musician re-negotiating unrequited affection for each other. The working title: "It's Your Move." The drive by dramaturgy are now in the last weeks of rehearsal. Performances for BENCHED will be April 22 and 23 at 7 pm. April 24 at Noon. "Benchgazi" may be revisited and become part of my MFA thesis, if I find a way to get it down to ten minutes,. |
