Good to hear from a muralist: Lois Dohra

In October I noted the mural by Lois Dohra and Grace Ann Morgan in the 18b Arts District. Since then Dohra posted a this: “Seems like yesterday Grace and I made this project, with the help of the LGBT community, a reality . . . As we continue to dance into the future may the footprints we leave be a path for others.”  In the same post I suggest a rededication would one way to acknowledge how it became part of a community. The mural will have its tenth anniversary next year.

D*Face Can Can

CAN CAN: The two concrete spray can sculptures by D*Face are another leave-behind from Life Is Beautiful Festival 2014. These two were moved and now sit side-by-side on 7th between Ogden and Stewart.  The bricks at the base are part of the installation . . .  Brick Chic: It’s a side project D*Face has done for other cities and the cans are designed to look embedded in the concrete. The illusion doesn't quite work here and they look like are ready to be nicknamed “Tomb for the Unknown Aerosol Artist.” Still, it's good to see these two works to join the downtown Las Vegas portfolio…Inside Joke: To make it site-specific satire, the two monuments can be reinstalled across the street from each other and be renamed “Street Art Gateway.”

City Grid as Storyteller

Las Vegas Weekly's Kristen Peterson is reporting the Modern art museum "is undergoing major changes as the board refreshes its messaging, reconsiders location options and seeks a new board chair." Hype for the museum began a year ago.  If that is so, it is unfortunate Las Vegas may not see this building on Charleston and Casino Center. One level is fitted in the first city grid, anchored by downtown, and the other level is an extension grid from Highway 91, aka Las Vegas Blvd and the Strip. The transition in street planning could have been a symbol the aesthetic coming out from Las Vegas . . .  right there, on the corner of Pastiche and Bricolage.
