Bright light on the LGBT mural in the 18b Arts District, Las Vegas Nevada I Photo: PtD.
When the U.S. Supreme Court decision on "same-sex marriage" was passed down, the LGBT mural at Third Street and Imperial wasn't left out.  Las Vegans gathered in front of it to mark a day of romantic equality, as posted on Facebook by Brian "Paco" Alvarez. Richard Hooker and Paco helped the mural move forward in 2005. The design is by Grace Ann Morgan and Lois Dohra. In a Paint This Desert post about the 47-foot-by-14-foot painting, Dohra wrote in to say: "As we continue to dance into the future may the foot prints we leave be a path for others."

ThereSheIs "Let Them Eat Paste"
FIELD NOTE:  Marie Antoinette makes a street art decree in the 18b Arts District in "Let Them Eat Paste," seen on Coolidge near S. 1st, seemingly just in time for the art walk in the 18b. Street artist "There She Is" is another trickster using consistent whimsy with fanciful portraits. EXTRA: From the artist's Instagram is this "Obligatory patriotic street art post. Happy Birthday America, you big ol' weirdo."

FIELD NOTES: Can of Bud Light treated in detailed glitter by Justin Favela during the last night of "Chop Shop," his exhibition of deconstructed art parts slightly extended to end on First Friday. In a previous post, Scenes from a Chop Shop, I mentioned there was almost an expectation to see the contents of a cooler be Justin-fied to work within his piñata party motif. The cans were there for consumption, not thematic support.  Then the artist tweeted this creation.  I had to see it in person.

FIELD NOTES:  First Friday is tonight,  and on Preview Thursday at Blackbird Studios artist Nancy Brown opened "Consumption,"  an installation that is the artist's response to "the fragile relationship between science and agribusiness." Says Brown via Blackbird Studio: "Our over-consumption fuels the devastating effects this has on our health, the environment,  and the lives of animals. It is the intent of this show to shed light on this overlooked yet important subject and to challenge the viewer to question their actions and the actions of others."  MORE: Also ready for First Friday at Blackbird Studio is Lisa Dittrich with "Enchanted White Girl Art Show." Blackbird Studio is on the edge of the 18b footprint at 1551 S. Commerce Street.

FIELD NOTES: "Seven Magic Mountains," the temporary public art installation by Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone that will be installed and displayed for two-years near Jean Dry Lake, had a Special Use Permit request approved by Clark County.  Other paperwork is expected to be completed over the summer. Co-produced by New York’s Art Production Fund and Nevada Museum of Art in Reno, the large-scale work of seven 25 to 30-foot high totems are made of boulders, local rocks only, painted in DayGlo colors. "Seven Magic Mountains" is currently under construction in Las Vegas.
