Kim Johnson "No Ordinary Life" Through October 1, 2016 Left of Center Gallery 2207 W Gowan Rd, North Las Vegas, NV 89032 Gallery hours: Tuesday - Friday noon - 5 pm and Saturdays 10 am - 3 pm
FIELD NOTES: Artist Kim Johnson has a local following and it’s grown. Many have been looking forward to this exhibition that has been a year in the making. It opened Saturday in North Las Vegas.
The show is "No Ordinary Life" at Left of Center Art Gallery that, as the press release says, "visually explores the diverse, natural order and design around us with subtle nuances of how we operate on sociological, psychological, and primal levels."
Johnson pushes forward her painting and sculptural weave of personal spiritual narrative through found objects that frame the moods of her portraits. Many have been introduced to the artist from her large-scale works, but her detail and craft stand out when the images are smaller.
Also, for "No Ordinary Life," Johnson uses the individual rooms of Left of Center Gallery to host a theme, a spiritual subtext as it were., placing a different part of her headspace on display.
There's also a moment for reflective participation. In one room an installation invites viewers to declare their creative spirit. It reminds us how ideas and muses are secrets, sometimes buried, and need to be recovered like found objects. That has Johnson encourage her followers to speak directly to any internal voices they may be hearing and share what they are saying.
