FIELD NOTES: The overcast morning forced the first light of 2017 to be fashionably late. People were waiting. By 6:30 a.m. five cars were in the parking lot, four had California plates and one was from Arizona. “I came to watch the sun rise at ‘Seven Magic Mountains’,” Maria Pizarro said. She left Long Beach, California, at 1 a.m. to begin her New Year resolutions to watch one sunrise and one sunset each month. Though it was cloudy everyone there were taking selfies, as did Pizarro. She also took time to simply gaze at the totems. What was her critique? “Magical,” Pizarro said. “A great place to be on the first.”
