Comedians Cheech and Chong will be playing The Joint Friday so you can expect pot-themed headlines. There's more to Richard "Cheech" Marin. He's big in Chicano Art circles as a collector and art advocate.
Besides touring with partner Chong, and War, he's been taking "Chicanitas: Small Paintings from the Cheech Marin Collection" on the road, which just opened at The Las Cruces Museum of Art in New Mexico after a stop at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego.
In June 2012 I had a chance to talk with Cheech about Chicano Art, how as a teenager he connected murals to works by Picasso and others, a subtext to his rock star character Alice Bowie, the long reach of street art, and a bit more.
It's been edited for length, small barking dogs, and me laughing over some of the answers.
Muralist and artist John Valadez with Cheech Marin. Valadez is one of the artists featured in "Chicanitas: Small Paintings from the Cheech Marin Collection."
